Noticing My Throat Chakra

Recently, I’ve been paying closer attention to my throat chakra—not only as an energetic center, but through the way it shows up in everyday life.

The throat is connected with communication and expression, but it can also be where we notice hesitation, unspoken thoughts, or tension when we aren’t expressing what feels true.

This doesn’t always mean we need to speak louder or say everything we’re thinking.

Sometimes, it’s about becoming aware of what we’re holding back, how our body responds, and whether we feel safe and ready to express ourselves.

For me, the throat also feels like a meeting place between different parts of my energetic system.

It connects what I’m sensing and understanding with my ability to bring that awareness into my body, voice, and everyday life.

Noticing the Shifts

You may have experienced times when something feels different but is difficult to explain.

Perhaps you’re communicating differently, questioning what you previously accepted, or becoming more aware of what feels true for you.

You might notice:

Tightness around your throat, jaw, neck, or shoulders; hesitation before speaking; overthinking what you want to say; difficulty finding the right words; a desire to express yourself more honestly; changes in your voice, breath, or posture.

These experiences don’t automatically mean your throat chakra is blocked.

They are simply information—an invitation to become curious about your body, your energy, and what may be happening within you.

Breath, Movement and Awareness

I often notice these shifts while walking the bush track near my home.

There are places along the track that have become familiar points of connection for me: my masculine tōtara tree, my grandmotherly fern Elouise, the branch where the faeries gather, and the clearing where I pause and reconnect with my energetic fields.

Each place has its own presence and personality.

Walking gives me space to breathe, move, and hear myself more clearly.

The rhythm of my body helps loosen what has become held or overthought.

You don’t need a particular bush track or energetic connection to begin noticing your own body.

Take a moment now and ask:

How does my throat feel? Is my jaw relaxed or held? What are my shoulders doing? Where is my breath moving? Is there something I’ve been thinking but haven’t expressed? Do I need to speak, or do I simply need time to understand what I feel?

You aren’t trying to diagnose or correct anything.

You’re beginning a conversation with yourself.

The Throat as Part of a Wider System

The throat does not work in isolation.

Your breath, jaw, shoulders, chest, spine, pelvis, and the rest of your energetic centers continually influence and respond to one another.

When one area feels held, another part of the body may change how it moves or responds.

This is why I don’t approach the throat by trying to fix it. I become curious about the wider picture.

Sometimes the throat needs the steadiness of the root chakra.

Sometimes it needs support from the heart and the space to acknowledge what we’re feeling.

At other times, it may connect with the sacral chakra—our relationship with creativity, enjoyment, personal values, and our sense of self.

The relationship can change from day to day.

A Simple Throat Chakra Awareness Practice

Sit or stand somewhere comfortable.

Before beginning, notice your breath and allow your body to settle.

Bring both hands in front of your throat, with your palms facing one another.

Pause and notice what you feel between your hands. You may experience warmth, tingling, pressure, movement, or nothing noticeable at all.

There is no correct response.

Slowly move one hand so the palm faces your throat.

Keep some comfortable space between your hand and your body.

Notice:

Does the sensation change as your hand moves closer? Does one distance feel more comfortable than another? Do you sense warmth, coolness, movement, or pressure? Does your breath change? Does another part of your body ask for your attention?

Gently move your hand forwards and backward until you find a position that feels comfortable.

You may feel drawn to place your other hand near your heart, solar plexus, sacral area, or somewhere else within your body.

Allow the two areas to be in conversation.

You’re not trying to push energy into your throat or make something happen.

You’re listening, observing, and allowing your body and energy to respond in its own way.

Letting the Body Lead

For me, this connection changes depending on what I’m experiencing. At one point, I felt my throat asking for support from my sacral chakra.

The connection brought forward my sense of self, what I valued, my creativity, and the emotions surrounding Sacha’s passing.

Rather than deciding what the experience meant, I allowed myself to notice it.

That is an important part of body awareness. We don’t always need to analyze the response immediately.

Sometimes, understanding comes after we’ve given the body enough space to be heard.

The practice is simple: Notice and Explore.

Let your body show you where the conversation wants to go.

Your Central Energy Pathway

Alongside the individual chakras, I also experience a central energetic pathway running through the body.

I refer to this as the life light or central column of light.

For me, it connects the different parts of the physical and energetic systems, allowing information and energy to move through the whole person rather than remaining focused in one area.

When I bring awareness to this pathway, I imagine energy moving gently through my body—from the Earth beneath me, through my body and energetic centers, and into the wider field around me.

The intention isn’t to force energy upwards or activate something dramatic.

It is simply to notice the relationship between: Your feet and the ground; your pelvis and spine; your breath and ribcage; your heart and throat; your thoughts and physical responses; your body and the energetic fields around you.

You might imagine the energy moving through these areas with each breath.

Let it travel at its own pace.

Tuning Into Your Own Sensations

Energy awareness can feel different for everyone.

You may notice:

Warmth or coolness; tingling or pulsing; a sense of movement; changes in your breath; a sound or word coming to mind; a feeling in your gut; a subtle inner knowing; no obvious sensation at all.

None of these responses is better than another.

This isn’t about chasing a big experience.

It’s about becoming present with what is already happening.

The more often you pause and notice, the more familiar your own responses may become.

Caring for the Physical Throat

Body and energy awareness can help you notice how you’re feeling, but physical throat symptoms can have many causes.

If you have persistent throat pain, difficulty swallowing, changes in your voice, breathing concerns, or symptoms that worry you, seek advice from an appropriately qualified healthcare professional.

Energy awareness can sit alongside appropriate physical care, but it should not replace it.

In this guided video, I explore the relationship between the throat, body, breath, and wider energetic pathways.

You can follow the practice in your own way, pausing whenever you need and noticing how your body responds.

Bringing It All Together

Everything within us is connected.

The throat is influenced by our breath, posture, emotions, thoughts, relationships, and the other areas of the body and energetic system.

Working with throat awareness isn’t only about speaking more.

It can also be about: Listening to yourself, recognizing what feels true, giving your body time to respond, understanding when you’re ready to speak, allowing expression to take different forms, becoming more comfortable with your own voice.

Small moments of awareness can change how you understand yourself.

Take a breath. Relax your jaw. Notice your throat. Stay curious about what your body is communicating.
